Bundee Aki teams up with Supermac’s

“We are delighted to have Bundee Aki on board as Brand Ambassador for our Fresh Range of products,” Supermac’s MD, Pat McDonagh said. “Bundee is an icon of Irish rugby and has proven himself as a great competitor. He is a natural fit for this fresh range of products and the Supermac’s brand in general. All of our beef, chicken and pork is 100% Irish and we have been proudly supporting farm families, clubs and events in these communities for over 40 years and you’d never know where Bundee might show up,” he said.

Supermac’s has a unique position at the heart of each community we are located in.  We are regularly the organisers and venues for fun runs, vintage rallies, charity fundraisers and numerous other community events throughout the country. We sponsor over 300 teams and over 50 charities nationwide, along with numerous community initiatives throughout Ireland.

“I am delighted to come on board with Supermac’s,” Bundee Aki said. “They are a brand I have been a big fan of for years and I am really looking forward to working with Pat, Una and all the team! Ireland is now my home and as everyone knows, enjoying a Supermac’s is a true sign of being home so can’t wait to get started! Hopefully, it now also means, I won’t have to swipe any more chicken tenders!”

Welcome to the team Bundee!

Support Trocaire

Supermac’s is appealing to its customers to support overseas development agency, Trócaire, in rolling out lifesaving Covid-19 vaccines to vulnerable communities in Somalia, East Africa.

We’re asking customers to donate in-store to ensure communities in Somalia, a poor and fragile country ravaged by conflict, drought and hunger, are protected from the killer virus. Over the years Supermac’s and its generous customers have contributed an incredible €500,000 plus to support Trócaire’s work throughout the world through in-store tap and donate, collections and fundraising events.

Paul Healy, Trócaire’s Country Director in Somalia, said the support of Supermac’s customers will be vital in helping the agency administer Covid-19 vaccines to communities in Gedo, southern Somalia, where Trócaire manages the health system.
He said: “While Ireland is emerging from lockdown, with 90 percent of people over 16 years fully vaccinated, only 1.5% of the population of over 17 million people are vaccinated in Somalia.”
“This is reflective of the massive vaccine inequity in the world. Devastated communities in Gedo are suffering and extremely vulnerable. The impact of Covid-19, conflict and climate change have left people hungry, without livelihoods, and in urgent need of medical care.”

Mr Healy said Trócaire is the main vaccinator in Gedo region, an area slightly bigger than Ireland, where the agency runs four district hospitals. It is overseeing the storage and administration of vaccines, as well as Covid and PCR testing.

He added a huge challenge is vaccine hesitancy and awareness amongst high-risk people including those who have been internally displaced due to conflict and climate change.
“Even getting people to adopt simple measures like handwashing can be a challenge. As well as administering the vaccine we have reached over 160,000 people with screening, treatment of cases and COVID-19 awareness messages. But there are millions more in need of support.”
“The donations from Supermac’s customers are greatly appreciated and have helped change the lives of so many. We look forward to continued support for the most vulnerable people in the world.”

Supermac’s MD, Pat McDonagh, said: “The global pandemic has ravaged communities throughout the world. We have seen its impact on communities here at home, but as we emerge from the clutches of the pandemic, it is important that we support those in need of vaccines throughout the world.”
“Trócaire is a charity very close to the hearts of myself and my wife myself Una and we are delighted to support its lifechanging work. Our family and teams across the organisation have seen for ourselves the impact of Trócaire’s work on the ground in Africa and Central America. It is devastating to see the levels of poverty. We would like to thank our customers, suppliers and the entire Supermac’s family for their fantastic contributions to the charity.”

100 jobs generated at Kiltullagh Plaza

Supermac’s founders Pat and Una McDonagh have announced that 100 jobs are to be created at the country’s latest motorway service station on the M6 at Kiltullagh. There will also be another 220 people employed in the future due to plans for three further plaza developments nationwide over the next two years.

The Kiltullagh Plaza on the M6 motorway will provide essential services for motorists on the Galway to Dublin route, filling the current void in service provision between Galway city and Enfield. The site, located at the Junction 16 roundabout, will be fully accessible to traffic travelling east and west and will link onto the existing road network with Loughrea and the major towns in East Galway.

The capital investment of €8 million means the development is one of the most significant business ventures in County Galway over the last 10 years. Construction work on the site is under way, and the service station and food court will open early next year. A variety of food offerings including Supermac’s, Papa John’s Pizza, Mac’s Place Deli, SuperSubs, Bewley’s, a bakery, and a fresh carvery will be available at the new development.

Supermac’s is Ireland’s largest indigenous company and currently employs more than 3,000 people. In addition to the new jobs in Kiltullagh, a further 220 positions will be created nationwide through plans for three further plaza developments over the next two years.

Pat McDonagh, owner of the famed Barack Obama Plaza in Moneygall on the M7, said that Supermac’s has identified the need to provide essential services for drivers throughout the country’s motorway system. “The volume of traffic on our motorways is continuously increasing. There are currently 15,000 vehicles passing the site at Kiltullagh daily. As well as providing key services, spacious parking means that drivers can rest comfortably, and ensure they are alert enough to take to the road.”

Pat McDonagh said that the amount of western bound traffic which stops at the Obama Plaza is quite large “Much of this is tourist traffic which is generally going in the direction of the Cliffs of Moher, coming from Dublin. Visitor numbers to Ireland have this year increased 24 per cent from the US, 12 percent from the UK, and 20 percent internationally. This has given a major boost to Irish businesses over the summer, and we hope the numbers continue to rise. We have seen through the success of the Obama Plaza and Moneygall that service stations can pull visitors into their surrounding areas and we hope that also happens in East Galway. The area has a rich depth of history with its medieval towns and attractions such as Esker Monastery and Dartfield Horse Museum.”

Meanwhile, Una McDonagh is delighted that Supermac’s is in a position to be generating employment near the couple’s own home place. “The focus from the outset has been on ensuring that the job creation benefit of the Kiltullagh Plaza will be centred on the local area. Supermac’s is delighted to bring a benefit to communities in villages and towns – places where economy is otherwise being threatened by modern consumer drift to cities and online shopping. We are so pleased, that within our own locality, we can make a significant, sustainable, contribution on a level such as this.”

Supermac’s announces first 100% fresh Irish 5oz Beef Burger

We are proud to introduce our  first 100% fresh meat Irish 5oz Beef Burger which will also be the first fresh meat burger available in a quick service food chain in Ireland.  Our family restaurant chain are delighted to launch the innovation in conjunction with a further announcement on our annual commitment to Irish Farmers now reaching in excess of €20 million per annum, increased in part due to the creation of the 100% fresh Irish 5oz Beef Burger.  Managing Director of Supermac’s Pat McDonagh was joined at the launch of the fresh burger and Supermac’s announcement of our support for Irish Farmers at the Tullamore Show today by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Simon Coveney and Irish Farmers’ Association President Eddie Downey.

Supermac’s spend with Irish Farmers’ spans across a wide range of producers including beef, chicken, dairy and vegetables.  Supermac’s is a member of both the IFA and the Irish Grassland Association and regularly features at key agricultural shows including the National Ploughing Championships, The Tullamore Show and Teagasc Open Days.

Speaking at the launch Mr. McDonagh says “we are most excited by the introduction of the Supermac’s fresh 100% Irish 5oz Beef Burger.  We are using fresh premium cuts of Irish Beef, which are never frozen and the burger is cooked to order every time.  We have overcome all potential challenges which serving a fresh beef burger in prime condition to customers could possibly present.  The feedback on the product which has been piloted in a number of restaurants ahead of its nationwide roll out over the past few weeks has been extremely positive.”

“We are committed to continuing our ongoing support of Irish Farmers which goes back to when we opened the doors of our first Supermac’s restaurant in Ballinasloe in 1978” continues Mr. McDonagh.  “This is something that has remained a constant in Supermac’s over the years.  We have some of the best quality grass fed beef on this island and I’m extremely proud to serve it in each of our restaurants.  The quality of the produce we carefully prepare for the 320,000 customers who walk through the doors of Supermac’s restaurants every week is imperative to us.”

Speaking at the announcement Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Simon Coveney says “This announcement by Supermac’s is a very welcome development for Irish farmers and the beef industry as a whole. Supermac’s have a long and successful background in the food business and are a great indigenous food story. This is a fantastic example of innovation and product development. It is a very strong endorsement of the quality of Irish beef and the very high standards present on Irish farms.”

Supermac’s is currently in the process of opening eight new restaurants throughout Ireland as part of its 2015 plans for growth. New locations include Tipperary Town Plaza, Drogheda, Clonshaugh and Ballacolla while plans have been submitted for a key motorway service development on the M18. The business is involved in over 100 community initiatives and sponsorships around Ireland.
